Description:
In summer 2017, I took GDIT 712: Ethics and Social Justice in the Digital Age with Dr. Rose Mary Mautino. During this course, we were given the opportunity to explore different ethical issues and how those issues related to technology. The course was broken into three parts; the first was focused on ethics, the second on social justice, and the third was a combination of the two. For my final presentation, I chose to look at social media and ethics. The goal in the final project was to connect research from one of our first two topics to personal research interests. Due to its prevalence in every part of today’s society, I wanted to take a closer look at how it affects people as professionals.
Social media Prezi
During the spring 2017, I took the course GDIT 717: Research Seminar in Instructional Technology taught by Dr. Joseph Kush. One of the goals of the course was to familiarize us with different components of the research process. As a result, one of the course requirements was to complete CITI training related to IRB procedures.
Reflection:
I have always been interested in social media and felt that it was necessary to add to the LTET courses. I thought back to my days during undergrad and what would have been beneficial to me and wanted to share this with my PK-4 students. I wanted to make my students aware of what they should know in terms of social media and professionalism. As a result, I incorporated this into the LTET courses and showed students how easy it is to locate anyone’s social media sites using a simple internet search.
When given the opportunity to research a topic of personal interest using the inquiry model, I immediately thought of social media. I wanted to read more about it in order to keep myself current and also better address it with my students. Additionally, this is a topic that I have to address on a yearly basis with the faculty members at my school. Though we are all professionals, there are always instances of improper social media use that have to be addressed. By conducting additional research on social media and familiarizing myself with its benefits and challenges in addition to student and workplace perceptions, I felt stronger in my ability to advocate for its use in an ethical and professional manner.
Additionally, I have included my CITI training certificates to demonstrate my competence with the process of conducting safe and effective research. We were required to complete the modules on social and behavioral research and conflicts of interest. Due to my background and potential dissertation focus, I also chose to complete elective modules on research with children and research in public elementary and secondary schools. These modules provided an in-depth look into acceptable procedures, and I truly appreciate the fact that I’m able to go back through and review any of the information when I deem necessary. This will be especially useful when I start writing my IRB for my dissertation.
