Description:
During the fall semester of 2016, I took GILT 540: Delivery, Trends, Responsibilities and Professionalism for Online Teaching as one of my cognates. This course, with Dr. David Carbonara, taught us how to create a successful online learning environment. Through the readings in the course, I learned the importance of modeling appropriate online behavior when teaching in an online setting. This made me think differently from how I was used to operating in a traditional classroom environment. Because students are not seeing the teacher face-to-face, it can often be difficult to convey something clearly. Instead, it is important to give example posts and clearly define the expectations to stop problems before they even start. I used what I learned in this course and also applied it to the set up on my learning environment from GDIT 706: Developing a Learning Environment using Instructional Technology in spring 2018.
Reflection:
My explanations for navigating the course were essential to an online learning environment, and I worked to model all of my interactions for my students. Being an elementary educator first and foremost, I understand the importance of modeling everything that you do with students. I also carried this through to my teaching of undergraduate students. When I taught the LTET courses at Duquesne, I provided students with a model for each assignment and a checklist/rubric to ensure student success.
In my online course that I designed for GILT 540, I first recorded an introductory video for students. This was one of the most important parts for me as it gave me an opportunity to introduce myself and briefly explain to the students what to expect. I also provided the students with a document detailing how to navigate the course, a rubric for the discussion board, the course syllabus, and netiquette for the class. I developed the class netiquette on my own using my own online course experiences and teaching experiences as a guide. I also gleaned information from Common Sense Education, a site that I use frequently in my position as technology facilitator.
All of the information included the “Introduction” folder for both Schoology courses demonstrates my commitment to ensuring that students have a safe and positive experience learning online. In addition, it’s very important that students see digital citizenship being modeled by their role models, including parents and teachers.
