The online teacher models, guides, and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior related to technology use.

Reflection: In order to model safe behavior, I created a document to show the students the Netiquette that we would use in our online course. It is so important to teach young students how to interact in an online forum, and the rules that I included are specific to students in grades 3-5. I obtained the STOP method information from the Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship curriculum which I have used frequently with my K-4 students. The lessons are designed according to grade level, and they are perfect for teaching how to use the computer and Internet safely. On the discussion board where the students were to provide feedback to their peers, I made sure to include the following statement: “I'll be looking for you to respond to at least two peers with reflections on their decisions and statements on whether you agree and disagree with them. Make sure that you provide rationale for your statements to your peers, and remember that just because you're disagreeing, doesn't mean that it can be done in a mean or condescending way.”

Artifacts:

  • The discussion board post can be found on my Schoology site.

  • The Netiquette document that I created can be found here. I used the information from this site in order to help create the Netiquette for my course.

  • In the GILT 514 course I created an Acceptable Use Policy for technology. I have used this many times in the past few years in order to teach students about what to do and not to do.

  • I also made sure to include a statement in my syllabus about Academic Integrity.
